7 Lies You Are Being Told About Weight Training

7-lies-weight-training

1) You shouldn’t lift weights because you will look like a body builder

This is perpetrated everywhere and would be laughable if it wasn’t so pervasive. And it’s perpetrated by athletes who should know better too! There’s a story about Arnold Schwarzenegger when he was a competitive body builder that people used to tell him they didn’t want to look like him and his response was don’t worry, you will never look like me.

You can take that and quadruple that for women. It is really hard to build muscle, so the idea that you could become accidentally ripped is pretty ridiculous. People often imagine fitness models when they think of weight training but the reality is that they have put an insane amount of work into their bodies and it’s designed to look that way for competitions but it’s not sustainable or healthy beyond that.

When people start to work on their fitness, they often want their body to look strong and fit too. And that is exactly what weight training does. But how it looks, is always up to you. And if your aim is to put on significant muscle, you are going to have to fight for it.

2) High Reps = toning, Heavy weight = bulking

False. There is no toning vs bulking it’s all just muscle building. As long as you are doing high reps/low weight to failure point or high weight/low reps to failure point you are going to be achieving muscle building – so it’s much more about what you enjoy doing. Although high repetition is probably more advantageous if you are developing your endurance fitness.

3) Exercise is about calories and weights don’t burn as much as cardio

Because calories. This is a common misconception. Because cardio burns the more calories it is of more value than weights. But the thing is muscles are calorie hogs. They burn more calories. So a good weight training program will turn your body into a calorie burning furnace, all day, every day. So unlike a cardio session where the calorie burn is done when the session is over, you have a calorie burn that is happening all the time.

4) It’s not as much of a workout

It’s as much of a workout as you want it to be. Exhibit A.

5) You need special equipment or you need to go to a gym

I have dumbbells and a barbell but for ages I used water bottles or bottles with sand in them or cans. You don’t need any special equipment at all.

6) You aren’t strong enough for weight training

In the beginning you start with mostly using your own body weight and you build on that. Anything can be adapted to any level so there’s no reason not to get involved.

7) You don’t have time

The best thing about weight training is that it is so easy to do at home with kids. Admittedly, my planks are a little harder if you have a four year old sitting on your back – but it’s a great way to get a workout at home and have the kids involved as much or as little as you like. And it’s very flexible because you can do it early in the morning or late at night.

Me and my running replacement. Something you mig Me and my running replacement.

Something you might not know about crochet is how time consuming it is. Like this is probably 50 hours of work. And you could just go out and buy a blanket for less than the cost of the yarn. Which is why commissioned pieces are tough because no matter what you are selling it for less than it’s worth. But if you give it away, it retains all its worth.

Anyway, running is the same. The value to you isn’t in the time in the clock - it’s in everything else
After a few interruptions, #friyay run club is bac After a few interruptions, #friyay run club is back! And a good reason for me to finally bite the bullet and go for a jog.

Sometimes when you’ve had a break you start to be afraid to start again and you just have to start somewhere.

Did it feel like running with a gorilla on my chest? Yes. But it was still lovely to go for a run with great company.

You don’t live on race results, you live on your You don’t live on race results, you live on your easy run, so make it a good one.
Coming back after a bit of a break is always a bit Coming back after a bit of a break is always a bit of an intuitive process and it’s normal to feel a bit like garbage, and the process is generally not linear. But being out in the sunshine helps 🙌
The FRIYAY run club is back and today we had some The FRIYAY run club is back and today we had some 50m efforts on the cards. And it was fresh! Us recovering marathoners stuck to jogging today 😉
Why run a marathon at the Gold Coast when you can Why run a marathon at the Gold Coast when you can run it a week later on your own as an unsupported run 🤣

Seriously though, this was not my plan. The plan was to run on the Gold Coast with all the atmosphere and people. Because all the things that make the marathon great happen in organised events - the people, the music, fellow runners, aid stations. When you do a run this long on your own you take away all the things that make it that little bit easier.

But, I just wanted to close this chapter if I could. And hit struggle town around 26km-30km with just being on my own and made a deal with myself to just walk/jog it in at that point and be happy to finish.

It’s funny that solo runs are called unsupported because they aren’t really. They are supported in a big way by family, by my amazing #opmovesisterhood community and my incredible @crossfitballina community as well. When I’m out there, I am supported in every way possible.

I’m so proud of this one. It might have been one of my toughest marathons but one of the ones I was happiest with too.
Me: in the recovery position as per usual after an Me: in the recovery position as per usual after anything at the gym 😜

Also pondering if I do want to run the virtual marathon. Tomorrow is the last day to do it. Tick tock.
Real talk: going to the Gold Coast was really hard Real talk: going to the Gold Coast was really hard. I had to hold my deep disappointment in a way that honoured it but also not in a way that it was allowed to breathe. Because I wanted to be there. You don’t get to see people you coach on training runs (or not all of them at least), but you do get to see them at the finish line. And I’m not looking at the clock - I’m looking at their face. No matter what kind of curve balls the day throws I’m hoping for happiness and pride. Because it’s not about the distance or the time it’s how you feel about it.

Anyway, I did struggle but I was happy with how I felt about it. And then I bought this glass ornament to remind me that beauty doesn’t need a purpose. And neither does a training block. You can just be happy with how it feels. And witnessing other people’s joy and achievement is more important than anything I might hold onto for myself.

At a certain point you’ve just got to get out th At a certain point you’ve just got to get out there and don’t out on a scale how fucked you are. Some injuries are simple and some are complex and I’m just trying to avoid 2017 level complexity. I don’t recommend learning how to walk again. Zero stars.

Run was great but the clincher is how it feels in a few hours or tomorrow

Turns out staring at a non-compliant foot in quiet Turns out staring at a non-compliant foot in quiet judgement doesn’t make it heal faster.

Had a tendon issue pop out almost out of nowhere on Monday, and figured if I just rested up and did all the things I would be good for Sunday.

Turns out wearing crappy shoes while carrying a 40kg kid who was having a sensory issue with crowds at the lantern parade will just tip your foot stabilisers right over the edge. Injuries are almost always stupid shit unrelated to running.

Anyway, it’s a bit shit and I’m sure at like any moment I will find the capacity to drag myself out of my pity party.

You get to keep the training, you just don’t get to go to the dance.
That feeling when all the long runs are in the ban That feeling when all the long runs are in the bank and marathon training becomes an eating competition.

It’s a big unknown but if you knew what would happen you probably wouldn’t even show up. That’s the fun part.
I have about a week off work. Currently torn betwe I have about a week off work. Currently torn between doing nothing and not wasting it 🤣 I’m sure I’ll come up with a middle ground. Maybe.
