Love is the collision between you and me

Zoey · December 22, 2015 · 1 Comment

My father wrote me a poem once. Among other things he said ‘love is the collision between you and me’. I saw a photo of my brother in Berlin today and I just about cried, because I miss that face, the face of the person who understands everything.

It’s been a really big year. And probably it’s only just catching up with me now. It’s been an amazing year but it’s also been a hard year. I’ve had to learn some lessons that I didn’t want to learn. And I doubted myself more often than not and a whole lot of it was not really planned so much as just flying by the seat of my pants and hoping for the best.

But when you step away from all of that day to day stuff and you see the bigger picture, it’s pretty incredible. Operation Move has continued to grow as a body positive community which makes me so happy. Being in the fitness space it’s so easy to fall into the trap of less, less, less. But I like that we are more. More fun, more food, more support, more training. No one is doing something ridiculous like learning to run while subsisting on 1,200 calories. The other day I was doing some strength sets at home and I was resting in between sets and Piper said to me “Keep working mummy. You’re not done yet.” When I think about what Operation Move is doing, I think about what it is doing for our kids too.

I remember years ago I was in a running group and someone shared one of those memes about how weights don’t make you bulky, cupcakes do. I didn’t stick around in that group for very long because life’s too short to promote guilt and shame.  I am much more interested in what we can do, both individually and as a community. Every decision I make, I think about it with reference to what our values are and where we are trying to go. I protect those values, because that’s what makes us special.

I’m grateful I collided with Operation Move.

Workout of the Week: The Ladder

Zoey · December 21, 2015 · Leave a Comment

WOW - The Ladder (1)

I have a fun one for you this week! As you move through the workout, there’s more and more easy running. Which is a nice change, right? But it also kind of means that those paces should be getting a whole lot faster as you go through as well. The workout is 30 minutes but there is only fifteen minutes of fast running in there so that should mean you will be able to up the pace a bit!

If you want to challenge yourself, you could reverse it so it gets harder and harder.

Happy running!

Become an Operation Move Ambassador and Receive Free Coaching for a Year

become an operation move ambassador in 2016

Every now and then our community hits a new milestone and I like to celebrate! This is a perfectly timed one. Our page has just hit 4,000 members and it’s the end of the year which is a great time to start thinking about kicking some major goals in 2016.

In honour of our 4,000 strong community I will be picking 4 women to be Operation Move ambassadors for 2016. And as an ambassador you get access to every program we offer including Learn to Run, Total Fitness Challenge and Far and Fast Customised Coaching. Which is worth over $1,500 for the year. In 2015 we’ve had two ambassadors – Jo and Treacy who are two of the most amazing women I know and have both achieved incredible things this year. I am so proud of them. Treacy ran two half marathons and PRed both of them and Jo ran one of the most challenging ultras you can find uphill at Comrades. But I think the thing that I am most proud of is how much they inspire and support everyone within our community – which is really what Operation Move is all about. It’s not about the race day, it’s about every day. And they do every day with passion and strength and grace.

I am so excited to be continuing in that tradition for 2016. If you want to dive right in, here is the form to nominate yourself. Anyone is eligible to put their hand up, but before you do make sure you are already a member of our Facebook Community Group. This is open for people who are already part of our programs or people in the wider Operation Move community. Existing ambassadors are also welcome to nominate themselves.

And what I’m looking for is really very simple.

Operation Move changed my life – it brought amazing, supportive and kind women into my life. It challenged all of my ideas about my body and what it could do. And it showed me how much people are capable of if they just do one thing that they think is impossible.

I’m looking for people who are as passionate about Operation Move as I am. And that is all.

I cannot wait to see who is interested in taking me up on this opportunity. Nominations will remain open until the 26th December.

Workout of the Week: The Wave

Zoey · December 14, 2015 · Leave a Comment

WOW - The Wave

For this workout the paces are:

Easy (60% effort – light jog)
Steady (70% effort – comfortable but a bit faster than easy)
Tempo (80% effort – comfortably hard but can still speak in short phrases)
Fast (90% effort – hard but still able to run for the entire interval)

The main portion of the run is 25:00 so if that feels a bit too much at your level, then you could reduce the intervals to 3:00 or if you want a longer workout you could do sets.

Happy Running!

If you are enjoying the Workout of the Week, you might enjoy The Total Fitness Challenge which features five workouts (two runs, two strength workouts and one HIIT session) every week.

Workout of the Week: Pyramid Hills

Zoey · December 7, 2015 · Leave a Comment

WOW - Pyramid Hills (1)

What is the difference between a single, a double and a triple hill sprint? Well it looks a bit like this:

Single: 0:30 Hill Sprint, Walk back down
Double: 0:30 Hill Sprint, Downhill Sprint Return, 0:30 Hill Sprint, Walk back down
Triple: 0:30 Hill Sprint, Downhill Sprint Return, 0:30 Hill Sprint, Downhill Sprint Return, 0:30 Hill Sprint, Walk back down

You will get a bit of recovery by sprinting downhill in the double and triples, but not that much, so it’s a very challenging hill workout. If you don’t think you are quite up to that yet you could try alternating single hill sprints with double hill sprints and work up to the pyramid.

Downhill running is a really fantastic workout and it’s often ignored because it doesn’t feel as hard as uphill running. But it is great for developing speed and strength. It will improve your cadence in terms of getting your body used to having a faster foot turnover, it will develop your quads and your hamstrings and it will help your body to feel what it is like to go faster than it thinks it can which is a great muscle memory to develop.

Happy running!
